In the wake of this horrific hurricane, remember that God is still here and that He hears you. He hears your cry out. He can feel your pain, understand your grief, and see your struggle. Do no discount God. He has not abandoned you or forsaken you. Even though in the mist of this flood, left here by Hurricane Harvey, it seems as though God unleashed His furry over Houston and the Gulf Coast, but that is not the case. No matter how horrifying, devastating or extreme things seem, God’s plan is perfect and supreme. Although, we do not understand everything God is doing, he promises that all will be revealed. For now, let us look at Psalm 16 as it gives us hope when we are feeling hopeless.
This Psalm of David begins with asking to be kept safe. “Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge.” Once we become a Christ follower, we have give our souls to the Lord. Their new address is His address. This is where our peace is found. Then, David Praises the Lord saying, “. . . apart from you, I have no good thing.” The Lord is perfect and good. Nothing will ever be bad that is from Him, because He loves His people unconditionally. David goes on to address the mounting sorrow of unbelievers, “ the sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods.” Anything that always seems to be more important than God is an idol or another god. This can come in many forms, such as panic, anxiety, fear when not dealt with through prayer. Those emotions can take over and send you spiraling further and further into darkness until you have lost all hope and faith in anything good, eventually leading away from God and towards Satan. Nothing good ever comes from Satan, no matter how beautiful, perfect, and how wonderful the timing is. Evil breeds evil, but God is good and He will give you goodness and light.
Next, David speaks of that goodness and light, “Lord, you have assigned me my cup; you have made my lot secure. . . surely I have a delightful inheritance.” This verse speaks about our place in heaven, knowing where your are going is a simple step to gaining your inheritance. For all those in pain because they lost a loved one or loved ones, note that as long as they gave their life over to Christ, they have no more pain, no more suffering, no more fear, panic or anxiety. They are safe, happy and at peace. Know that today.
Lastly, David rejoices, because God has, “. . . made known to me the path of life. You will fill me with joy in your right had.” David was secure in the Lord. Hopelessness did not overtake him, but the Lord did.
